The flaw in purity: Sun-Venus enmity

As the Sun ingresses into Libra, its debilitation point, we begin to address a lot of our stubbornness and self-imposed rules that make us feel morally or spiritually superior to others. Purity is a frequently discussed topic in the Vedas and Hindu culture, it is said that the Sun acts as a purifying force that eviscerates the 'negative' or 'desire-inducing' qualities of the world and it does the same with a planet or house it touches in one's birth chart. The Sun represents the Truth, the purest, the bluntest expression of the vessel it chooses, and often this can lead to one putting themselves in difficult or dangerous situations especially if Sun sits in Venus-ruled signs where the desire to control is lost. In Taurus, Sun loses control over social conditioning, the lineage of primary caregivers, and the wealth one is born into which makes 2nd house Suns very hard working in the material realm but it often comes at the cost of them being unable to connect very well with their family members because these people are often stubborn. In Libra, the Sun loses control over the mundane external aspects and the emotions of others. A king, no matter how great at ruling his kingdom, will always have people who will criticize him. A great example of this is in the Ramayana, where Lord Ram was suspicious of his beloved wife Sita being 'impure' after coming back from Ravan's palace. This need to maintain purity and have excessively high standards led to his wife abandoning him and eventually dying in front of him. The Sun who is the giver of power often forgets that without the receiver, its power to give would be of no use. Venus on the other hand understands how the completion and sustenance of life only through union which is why only Shukracharya has been given the power to bring back someone to life (mritsanjeevani vidya) despite being imperfect; he was cast out of heaven and had only one eye. This is also why in the Vimshottari dasha system, the Mahadasha of the Sun (Krittika) is the first but the final one representing cycles of rebirth is that of Venus (Bharani). The flaw in taking the concept of purity to an extreme level is isolation and the inability to accept the divine flowing through different sources which is the entire point of the spiritual path. Sun finds joy in the 9th house because it represents your birth religion and understanding the 'benefits' (bhagya sthan) of praying to a deity but it's also a descending house that can often make you blinded by the fortune you receive so you stop growing in your pursuit for one-ness with the divine or wanting to become divine yourself. This particular house is also ruled by the law-maker, Brihaspati, which can make the native with Sun placed here very stringent and tyrannical (they often go by the book). Venus on the other hand relishes and actively values the support of the 2nd house, the exchange and camaraderie of the 7th house, and finally exalts in the 12th house where everyone is viewed as an extension of the divine so one begins to love and give generously. A perfect allegory of this is the swan which is a vehicle of the Sun-goddess Gayatri/Savitri. This swan is constantly trying to find knowledge by only picking out the purest water from the surface of the cosmic ocean which shows that due to its quest for purity, it forgoes the entire vast and deep ocean of the universe that is constantly growing and evolving. This is also a strong metaphor for how the Vedic right-hand path practitioners lost out on a massive wealth of knowledge by filtering people out of temples and rituals just based on their varna (occupation and money making relating to both the 2nd and 7th houses). Sun is inimical to Venus for Venus values everything and gives value to everything, from the smallest ant to the wealthiest person. The Sun on the other hand destroys the need for anything but itself to be valued. It burns the traits of the smallest ant or the wealthiest person away until there's nothing but himself.

All the sleepers in a night of delusion beholding so many dreams. In this world of darkness, only those who sever themselves from the material world, become absorbed in the contemplation of the supreme. None can be regarded as really woken up from sleep till they have renounced all sensuous delights. -Lord Ram
