Rahu is the sheath, Ketu is the sword.

Lord Vishnu as Mohini holding the nectar of immortality

The nodes are changing signs in May according to Pushyapaksha ayanamsa which is why I decided to write this piece to explore the esoteric meaning of the nodes. The north node/Rahu does not eclipse the Moon for it has qualities similar to the Moon; it veils, creates confusion and gives a lot of material nourishment but due to its strong windy quality it is unstable and takes as soon as it gives for it is supposed to be feeding into your ego and every idiosyncrasy to delude you further into your destruction. Rahu is related to the gambling aspect of Lakshmi which is why it exalts in the sign of Taurus where it finds comfort in the muddy and transient nature of money. Rahu is essentially the sheath that completely blunts our ability to fight any obstacles in our path and wants to avoid engaging in a spiritual battle which is why Rahu is also known as our spiritual protector for at his spiritual peak, he becomes like a mendicant and a guardian angel (as indicated in Shatabhisha nakshatra, the star of 100 healers) for it can use all the resources and people that have been attracted to you through its friendly and star-like quality which is another reason why fame is associated to it. Rahu also helps keep away the sourness and sharpness of Ketu that wants to destroy every chance to engage in a material life in a peaceful manner which is why Rahu is related to the Devil card in the Tarot for it is a representation of our bondage to material life.

In the churning of the ocean, Svarnabhanu gets a taste of the nectar of immortality and gets caught when he’s staying for more due to his greed. It is the body/tail/Ketu that receives this nectar and becomes immortalized which is why Ketu represents the karmas of our ancestors and how we can fulfill them to get as close as possible to the divine nectar which is also why it is said that only Ketu (ancestral will) can control Rahu (‘personal’ will). Rahu gives the illusion of freedom for it shows how when we are blunt and without boundaries, everybody will give us what you need for the moment. You might also feel the residual shame associated with the house where Rahu transits or sits for those are things making you weaker and submissive until you are reborn with more desire. Ketu on the other hand is known as the protector of the Sun (our blood, our true will) and eclipses the Moon because it dissolves any false illusions with its sword that cuts through the world until it reaches a point of salvation. Ketu has no desire due to it being the Moksha karaka which is why it becomes this empty hole that sucks in things that are weak to satisfy itself without a care for anything in the world. Ketu represents the raw power that is associated with the Ace of Swords in the Tarot cards for it also takes the person to the highest point in their life (its second name being Shikhi which means peak or the top of our head) however, its detached nature can cause instability as well due to eventually everything that was feeding into it fading and sometimes Ketu heavy individuals can find themselves wishing for death or falling off the spiritual path due to the increasing Tamas which is why it is advised to have an appropriate Guru that can guide you into destroying your false illusions slowly instead of taking away things you or your family need to sustain themselves.

Many Sadhanas/spiritual practices of fierce gods and goddesses include the deity holding a khadga or a sword that represents pure knowledge through which they clear your path to moksha quickly however this sword always wears a sheath of ignorance for it shows a unified being that cultivates their path towards liberation by integrating their shadow aspect and converting it into a cloak of grace.

The upcoming transit of Rahu in Aries represents how we will have to project an image of an independent and fierce person but with Ketu in Libra, we will be using our power to uplift those in need and honor the relationship we have with ourselves to become outstanding and grow further into pursuing our great work and duty to fellow human beings.

'The difference between those gleaming with the light of lifeforce and those dull in the dust and shadows is only that one allows a pure channel for impulse to be utilized and sculpted, and the other enslaves impulse to ego, weakness, & inhibitions, and disperses and over-rationalizes the sacred spark until it is broken completely. Ego that insists: I am the best at this present moment, and clouds and sludges like shallow swampy water, hiding its creatures and trying to pull all others into its darkness. And sacred impulse is a crystal ocean with such incomprehensible depths, the foundation of all life; its waters stretch so far and vast that it becomes the divine blue mirror to reflect heaven onto Earth.' -Claire Nakti
