Logos and Eros (2nd house-8th house)

Ancient Greeks believed that logos (word, speech and thoughts) and Eros (God of passion, love and chaos) cannot be separated for it is flapping of the wings of Eros that leads one to tread the path of thinking and expanding their mind. In jyotish, the 2nd house is essentially logos, it’s the seat of the Vak Devi (Goddess of speech) and governs the throat, mouth and face… all equally important in expression of one’s self. What we think is an expression of the small egoic self is actually a limited perspective for speech occurs in 4 levels: Para (Svadhishthana chakra, as impulse), Pashyanti (Anhata chakra, as refined desire with emotion), Madhyama (Vishnuddha chakra, desire with proper language and words) and finally Vaikhari (Lalana chakra, as spoken word). When we look at Para vak, the purest impulse of the divine to express itself is that which is seated in the 8th house of the chart. The 8th house is known as ‘guhya’ or secret which is important in tantra sadhana for one stores a lot of the energy of the mantra, alchemizes and utilizes it through the secret workings of this house. Svadhishthana means to become self-established and desire in its purest form is divinity and not something ‘dirty’ or something to be suppressed. Lalana chakra is the secret chakra at the soft palate of the mouth and its the store house of amrita (nectar of immortality). It is said that amrita can either be burnt by the egoic fires of the Manipura chakra (stomach) or can be transmuted in the Vishuddha chakra (throat) where it turns into Vak siddhi (perfection of speech). The tongue acts like the fork in the road that can lead you to wasting your libido, the life force to the ego where it takes you away from divinity or it can transform your external experiences through simply preserving your speech.

Word (2H) without Eros (8H) is lack lustre and akin to white noise. The world we’re currently living in is full of data and information but knowledge itself is rare because the information does not transform one completely. It was said that when Socrates spoke, people would be moved to tears and would stand in awe and extreme joy… this is the power of Eros and logos. This is the blessing of the great Goddess Lalita, She who is known as Kameshwari (She who is the giver of desire) and Vagheshwari (She who is the mother of words), the desire to play that permeates the 3 worlds and the one beyond them. Lalita unites (as Yogeshwari) the 2H-8H and blesses Her devotees to play in extremes of fullness (2H being nourishment) and emptiness (8H being expulsion) which bring an expansion of our limited intelligence. Reading the Lalita Sahasranama is known to be a form of penance but interestingly, you feel so full despite ‘emptying’ yourself of what you think you are when you reach the last nama that signifies Her independence: Lalitambika.
